SMTH Digital Art Program
Edition III (2023-24)
BIOGRAPHY
Katsuki Nogami has constantly explored identity through appearance and the face, driven by the discrimination she faced abroad. Seeking refuge on the Internet, she adopted a false identity that blurred the line between her online and offline selves. However, this anonymity led her to lose her identity and sense of responsibility.
In her latest works, she has embraced her face to accept her existence, using a scanner to document her skin over four years, driven by the fear of mortality. In the midst of a culture saturated with images of faces, she strives to reclaim authenticity, enhancing objectivity through technology.
Her theme, rooted in personal experience, resonates universally in our internet-driven society. While she appreciates the opportunities offered by capitalism, she recognizes its manipulative nature. As an artist, she faces these complexities as a form of self-therapy, acknowledging the omnipresent issue of identity crisis and its consequences.
